This is a story about an young guy, Panchabatla Sarangapani, who is very much passionate about Engineering study and who believes that one should make a career towards which they have passion and love. Pani (Vijay), Nikhil (Jeeva) and Venkat (Sreeram) are three new students joined in one of the best Engineering colleges of India and they become roommates. Venkat is passionate about wildlife photography, but as per his Father's wish, he joins the Engineering course. Nikhil comes from a poor family and he is always worried and scared about his future, which makes him not able to concentrate on his studies. Both Venkat and Nikhil get poor marks in the exams, but Pani always stays on top in studies.
The Dean of the college, Virupaksha Sundaram (Sathyaraj), also being nicknamed as Virus by his students, is a strict man, who believes in the traditional approach of teaching which is not liked by Pani. This makes Sundaram to have a dislike towards Pani and also towards his roommates Nikhil and Venkat. Pani happens to meet Sundaram's daughter Ria (Ileana). Initially Ria hates Pani's straight forward nature, but later she starts loving him. Pani also gets a competitor Srinu, also nicknamed as Silencer, who makes a challenge with Pani that exactly after 10 years, he will meet him to prove that he is in better position than Pani.
During his years in the College, Pani becomes the most lovable by both of his friends and he even impresses the Dean. But suddenly he disappears after the completion of his education. Whether the friends unite again, whether Ria marries Pani or not and whether Srinu gets successful in his challenge or not, should be watched on big screen.
Vijay and Sriram were decent in their performance. Jeeva was the most impressive. Ileana is just Ok. Sathyaraj was good enough. For those who watched the original Hindi version, they have a reference to compare the acting and they might feel like the acting in Hindi version is much better than this except Jeeva's acting.
Shankar did not make any changes to the original Hindi version, except songs. Although Shankar is a great director, we cannot give any credit to him for this film except appreciating him for the idea of making a remake of the film. The songs have been picturized in Shankar's style, rich and expensive with huge sets. But music director Harris Jayaraj disappoints this time with his poor tunes. The movie does not bore you at any point and it gives you a feel-good feeling. There are some scenes that make you laugh to the extreme and some scenes make you too much emotional. But at the end, it gives a really good message. Overall, it is a must watch movie.
